April 21, 2009

"Slap and tickle" - The NOW Orchestra (Animal tales)
"Concierto de aranjuez" - Jim Hall (Concierto)
"Modal trane" -Turtle Island Quartet (A love supreme: the legacy of John Coltrane)
"L'axe du fou (axis of madness)" - Forgas Band Phenomena (L'axe du fou/Axis of madness)
"Pond life IV" - Ann Southam (Pond life)
"Chasen vs. suribachi" - Medeski, Martin, & Wood (Radiolarians II)
"Brother, can you spare a dime?" - Ray Anderson (Every one of us)
"Succor" - Flow Trio (Rejuvenation)
"T.A. the W. (tender as the wind)" - Lost tribe (Lost tribe)
"The queen's drone" - The Bruce Freedman African Groove Band (Live at the Cellar)
"Uncharted" - Joshua Redman (Compass)
"Erghen diado" - Indigone Trio & Strings (Cycles)
"Lazy snake" - Dave Holland Sextet (Pass it on)
"Four winds" - David Holland Quartet (Conference of the birds)
"Enlightenment" - Graham Haynes (The griot's footsteps)

A whopping 15 tracks here, perhaps the lowest number of items ever played on Breaking The Tethers. The reason for this is because of the length of the tunes; jazz pieces are often long but some in this set went on for quite some time e.g. "Enlightenment" by Graham Haynes is nearly 27 minutes long.

Fave track this week: "Chasen vs. suribachi" by MMW from the brand-new release Radiolarians II. I saw this in Vancouver last week and grabbed it.

"Dark state of mind" - Tuatara (Breaking the ethers)
"E" - Dave Kikoski (Dave Kikoski)

"Sailing" - Ion Zoo (Set free at the Cellar)
"City lights" - Brenda Earle (Happenings)
"Figwig" - Flute Force Four (Flutistry)
"We're not from around here" - Bill Frisell (The best of Bill Frisell: vol. 1, folk songs)
"Aquatic adventures, episode 19: the unceremonious demise of waterbugs" - Jeff Younger's Sandbox (The nudger)
"Leopard lady" - Franz Koglmann (L'heure bleue)
"Mixed grill" - Bill Evans/Randy Brecker (Soulbop band live)

"Against the day" - Land of Kush (Against the day)
"Stalker" - Time Jazz Quartet (Studies in jazz in studie: aspects of jazz from the Netherlands
"It's all good" - Hank Crawford/Jimmy McGriff (Crunch time)

Perhaps the most notable thing about this show was that 1/5 (4/20) of the tracks feature vocals prominently. Four songs out of 20 may not seem like much but I used to program weeks on end of shows without vocals. Oh well, times change.

"Open window" - David Friesen (Castles and flags)
"Double-sens (double entendre)" - Forgas Band Phenomena (L'axe du fou/Axis of madness)
"Life" - Palle Mikkelborg (Song…. tread lightly)
"Munchkins" - Mark Helias (Loopin' the cool)

I have to admit, I really liked this show, favourites galore, new and old. I'm particularly fond of the pairing of Soft Machine and Lee Morgan, two of my main likes. Looking at the Soft Machine track in particular, I hadn't heard either their Fourth or Fifth albums until recently and was not sure if they would hold up to the great Third record; they aren't quite as good as Third but they are better than I expected so I played one track on Breaking The Tethers today.

"Hobo comedies" - Jerry Granelli (The V16 project)
"My favorite things" - McCoy Tyner (Guitars)
"Barretts bag" - HAR-You Percussion Group (Sounds of ghetto youth)

Another fun and varied show. There were a number of new tracks, first appearances (Fela!), lots of guitar (especially in the middle hour), some organ, and Indian, African, and Balkan-influenced sounds. A nice mix in all, I think.

"Chief Crazy Horse" - Wayne Shorter Quartet (Usher Hall, Edinburgh, Scotland, March 8, 2003)
"Telematic" - Fieldwork (Simulated progress)
"American buffalo" - Scott Fields Ensemble (Mamet)

Perhaps the most notable thing about this week's show is that I actually played two tracks by local performers (Tricia Edwards and Simon Fisk); normally, I manage one. I don't consciously avoid playing local musicians but I guess they sometimes get lost in the mix; there is loads more content from elsewhere in Canada and internationally. Still, I must remember the local scene, which isn't shabby.

March 20, 2009

This was a showfill for the Friday morning program, Jazz Stains:

"Autumn solstice" - Rubim de Toledo (The river)
"Free jazz" - Ornette Coleman Double Quartet (Free jazz)
"Tico" - You Percussion Group (Sounds of ghetto youth)
"Boubacar" - McCoy Tyner with Bill Frisell (Guitars)
"Fisch tanz" - Petr Cancura (People music)
"Alexander the great" - Joe Lovano (Symphonica)
"Moment to moment" - Joe Locke Quartet (Moment to moment)
"Freedom tickler" - Charlie Hunter Trio (Friends seen and unseen)
"High-higher-her" - Jesse Van Ruller (Trio)
"Make up your mind" - Barry Romberg (Accidental beef)
"Felix major" - The Jeff Presslaff Trio (Red goddess)
"The theme" - Paul Chambers (Bass on top)
"Nataraj" - David S. Ware (Shakti)
"Pick up sticks" - Flow Trio (Rejuvenation)
"Signs & wonders" - Denny Zeitlin/David Friesen (Denny Zeitlin/David Friesen)

Two things to note here: First, believe it or not, this is the only time I've played Ornette Coleman's "Free jazz" on any CJSW show. I played the "First take" of "Free jazz" a couple of years ago but never the original release. Glad to be able to put it on air. Second, only 15 tracks were played today; there were a number of long tunes, including "Free jazz". This might be the fewest number of pieces played in a show I have hosted.

I'll be back on Tuesday with Breaking The Tethers.

"Well you needn't" - Tricia Edwards (Joy spring)
"La 13eme lune (the 13th moon)" - Forgas Band Phenomena (L'axe du fou/Axis of madness)
"Chiquilin de bachin" - Bobo Stenson Trio (Cantando)
"Jellyfish lullaby" - Mark Alban Lotz & Lotz Of Music (Bite!)
"Tisra misra" - Curtis Andrews (The offering of)
"Doo-dah for three alto saxophones" - William Street and Roger Admiral (My very first solo)
"Rossignol" -Dee Alexander (Wild is the wind)
"Rejuvenation" - Lonnie Liston Smith (Astral travelling)
"Voodoo doll" - Dr. Lonnie Smith (Rise up!)
"Saturn 5" - Tribal tech (Rocket science)
"Leo Leo" - Bess Drury (Artic)
"Halfway there" - Pat Collins Quartet (In the moment)
"Passion dance" - McCoy Tyner with Marc Ribot (Guitars)
"Woodstock" - Leora Cashe and the Ross Taggart Trio (Another side now)
"Side effects may include" - Gutbucket (A modest proposal)
"Out jam/via mwandishi" - Christian McBride (Live at Tonic)
"Living room" - The Tom Warrington Trio (The mountain)
"W.W.T.W.D." - The Gordon Grdina Trio (… if accident will)
"Santa Anna" - James Cohen (High side of lowdown)

This show featured loads of guitar (not deliberate, just kinda turned out that way), plenty of electric piano (again, not deliberate) and FOUR tracks with singing! (actually, there are vocalizations on the Dr. Lonnie Smith tune as well) What on earth am I doing? :-) I used to go weeks on end without playing any tracks with vocals. Things change, I guess.

Two other things: I was pleased to get the new McCoy Tyner CD in my hands. It came out late last year so it's been a while but it's still fresh to me and most listeners (I hope). The lengthy live version of "So what" from Miles Davis was good to hear too. There's nice work from Coltrane on this performance (I know, what else would you expect).

I'll be doing the Friday, March 20 edition of Jazz Stains on CJSW, 6-9 am, so feel free to listen in then. After that, it's back to Breaking The Tethers on Tuesday, March 24.
