"Where is Wanda Skutnick?" - Michael Vlatkovich (Three3)
"Misturada ("mixing")" - Airto Moreira/Flora Purim/Joe Farrell (Three-way mirror)
"Spencer Hoveskeland Trio" - Harbinger (Harbinger jump)
This was a show with lots of new tracks and a fair amount of Canadian experimental music. I wish I had more time to play "Composition 356" by Braxton and Brenders but it goes on for 45+ minutes; I'll have to plan better in the future but at least some of the track was played (several minutes).

"Double nickel" - Yellowjackets featuring Mike Stern (Lifecycle)
"Composition 199" - Anthony Braxton/Kyle Brenders (Toronto (duets) 1999)
I think this was a great show, with a wide variety of tracks played and more in number than usual (nearly 30). A interesting feature was some of the interesting titles e.g. "Zombies love dancin' to this number" and "You are a protocol droid, are you not?" I also loved the crazed version of Heart's "Barracuda" from the new Bad Plus with Wendy Lewis CD.
This was my first show back after two week's absensce. Philip Barker, the Morning Joy host on CJSW, ably filled in for me twice. I am in his debt.

"Ajar" - Esbjorn Svensson Trio (Leucocyte)
"The outer view" - George Russell Sextet (The outer view)
"We've got Silver at six" - Horace Silver (The hardbop grandpop)
Lots of notable tunes this week, including:
"Dr. Mganga" by Eddie Henderson - funky '70s stuff without being mushy
"Respiration" by Ben Allison - I think I like everything that this guy does
"Seraphic light" by the Saxophone Summit - a great cover of a less-well-known, (very) late period Coltrane tune
"Ca'purange" by Dexter Gordon - things really take off in this piece when Dexter kicks in; Stanley Clarke's electric bass works very well here
"Harmonic disorder" by Matthew Shipp - Matthew Shipp good!!
"The outer view" by George Russell - this must have been way out by 1962 standards
Hmm, I think I really liked the stuff I played this week...
I'll be away for the next two weeks (one week business, one week pleasure). Philip Barker from Morning Joy will be filling in for me on both shows. Many thanks to Philip! I am definitely in his debt. The first Breaking The Tethers with me back will be Tuesday, February 10.

"Suspension" - Dave Burrell & Billy Martin (Consequences)
"All that I need is love" - Melody Gardot (Worrisome heart)

"Children's song no. 1" - Chick Corea (Children's songs)
"Isla de las mujeres" - Quadro Nuevo (Tango bitter sweet)

"Ryo's first flight" - Gene Ess (Modes of limited transcendence)
"Infant eyes" - Chris Davis (A night remembered)
"Theme: Koko" - Charlie Parker (Bird in time 1940-1947)
This edition of Breaking The Tethers featured a nice mix of tracks, performers, styles, old and new, etc. I even played a tune from a "smooth jazz" performer, Brian Culbertson (it was the only track I liked from the album). Variety is the spice of life.
I'll be doing the show on January 20 and then I'm away for two weeks, back behind the mike on February 10. Philip Barker from Morning Joy will be taking the Jan. 20 program (thanks, Philip!). I'm not sure who will be doing the Feb. 3 show yet.

"Farewell Angelina" - Michel Benita featuring Manu Codjia (Ramblin')
"One peaceful moment" - John Hicks (Sweet love of mine)
"Totina" - Dream Algebra (Free Burma)
"Froggy's magic twanger" - Jim McAuley (The ultimate frog)
"Bluesy lunedi" - Alain Bedard Auguste Quintet (Bluesy lunedi)
"Capricorn" - Cannonball Adderley (The soul zodiac)
"India" - Robert Dick and Soldier String Quartet (Jazz standards on Mars)
"Are you the favorite person of anybody" - Marco Benevento (Invisible baby)
"Let it ride" - Nicholas Payton (Into the blue)
"Momentary lapse" - Mary Halvorson Trio (Dragon's head)
"Sleepless lullaby" - Rob Mosher's Storytime (The tortoise)
"Donna Lee (variations)" - Chris Donnelly (Solo)
"Black gipsy" - Archie Shepp (Black gipsy)
"Obsession" - John Bickerton Trio (Open music)
"Mister night" - Lenny Breau (Lenny Breau trio)
Another show with not many tracks played (only 17 in three hours) but those that were featured are pretty good. In particular, I give kudos to "Black gipsy" by Archie Shepp, "Momentary lapse" by Mary Halvorson, and "Mister night" by Lenny Breau. For the cheese factor (though it kinda works), I'd throw in "Capricorn" by Cannonball Adderley.
