November 8, 2018 (Alternative To What?)

https://cjsw.com/program/alternative-to-what/episode/20181108/

Kerry Clarke, longtime host of Alternative To What?, once again handed me the reins of her show for this week (thanks, Kerry!).  I am always pleased to fill in when she's away as it gives me an opportunity to broadcast at a different time on a different day and, most importantly, venture outside of the jazz world that I usually feature on Breaking The Tethers, my regular program.  And venture I did.  The tracklist at the above link is literally all over the musical map.  And so it should be :-)

I'm next on air on Monday, November 12, 10-11 am MT, 90.9 FM, cjsw.com, for my usual show.  Please join me then.

October 22, 2018 - Funding Drive 2018 show!

https://cjsw.com/program/breaking-the-tethers/episode/20181022/

This was the annual Breaking The Tethers CJSW funding drive show.  Frequent Breaking The Tethers guest host Linda Cunningham was able to join me for the first half of the program and I chatted with CJSW community Development coordinator, Simon MacLeod, for part of the second half.  Many thanks to both!  Many thanks also to everyone who pledged to the show!  Last I heard, the total for the hour was $420 (though there may be some post-show pledges).

Of course, you can still pledge to CJSW for BTT or any other show, until 6 pm MT this coming Friday, October 26.  Just call 403-220-5000 or go to fundingdrive.ca!

The next episode of Breaking The Tethers will be a regular kind of show, probably mostly featuring a mix of newly-released material. Join me on Monday, October 29, 10-11 am MT, 90.9 FM or cjsw.com

https://cjsw.com/program/breaking-the-tethers/episode/20181015

A definite lean to the the "out there"/avant side of things in this week's program. Maybe I've been getting a little too much "straight-ahead" in my musical selections recently? Time to turn it back (at least for a week :-)

As mentioned, the show on October 22 will be the Breaking The Tethers 2018 funding drive show. Linda Cunningham and I will play some tunes and chat from 10-11 am MT on CJSW 90.9 FM/cjsw.com. Everyone is more than welcome to tune in and, even better, call in and pledge! Any support for BTT and for Calgary's campus and community radio station is appreciated! Check out more details at fundingdrive.ca and here.

October 8, 2018

https://cjsw.com/program/breaking-the-tethers/episode/20181008

Definitely a wide and varied show this week, especially style-wise.  I dug it all but maybe my favourite track was "Useless interposition" from the new chess-themed recording, Duo, by Jeff Snyder and Frederico Ughi; it reminds me of the albums by Keiran Hebden and the late Steve Reid, which I quite liked.

Next week's program will likely be similar (and hopefully just as good!).  Join me from 10-11 am MT on CJSW 90.9 FM or cjsw.com, Monday, October 15.

You can also join me and Linda Cunningham in two weeks for the annual CJSW Funding Drive edition of Breaking The Tethers.  Time and station are the same, date will be Monday, October 22.

On the subject of the Funding Drive (FD), please check out fundingdrive.ca for more information on the event. I've also put some FD-related odds and ends on this blog, at http://tethers.blogspot.com/2018/10/cjsw-funding-drive-2018-and-breaking.html.

Thanks!

CJSW Funding Drive 2018 and Breaking The Tethers

Ahoy!

From a CJSW perspective, we're coming up to the happiest time of the year, the annual funding drive (FD)!  This is an important week for Calgary's campus and community radio station where we call upon our listeners to pledge support to CJSW to help the station grow and develop for the next year.  Here are the basics about the drive for this year:

*The FD will run from Friday, October 19 at 9 am through Friday, October 25 at 6pm.

*The theme this year is an aquatic one, FM Anchor (as in "CJSW is your FM anchor". Truth!)

*The website for the funding drive is fundingdrive.ca.

*The hashtag for the FD is #FMAnchor.

*The main goal is to bring in $200,000, all of which will go to new equipment e.g. high quality audio recorders, band room upgrades, etc.

*There is also a stretch goal of an additional $50,000, which, if reached (fingers crossed!), will go to replacing CJSW's backup transmitter.

*There will be incentives given as thanks for pledging, at various levels. Check these out at fundingdrive.ca. There's some cool stuff!

*You can pre-pledge online at fundingdrive.ca. Once the funding drive officially begins, you can still pledge via the website or call 403-220-5000.  You can also email me anytime about pledging at wallersmooth@gmail.com.

The Breaking The Tethers (BTT) funding drive program will take place on Monday, October 22, 10-11 am MT, 90.9 FM or cjsw.com.  As happened the last couple of years, Linda Cunningham and I will co-host the show.  We'll chat, play some music, have fun, and hopefully help to raise some money for the station.

There will be a special Breaking The Tethers mix CD available to everyone who pledges at the $100 level or higher ($100+ pledgers will still get the incentives at the station level). Here's what's on the disc, in order:

The Sons Of Kemet - "My queen is Harriet Tubman"
Keith Price - "Grunge"
Mark McGrain - "Etreinte"
Fred Gerlach - "Eyrie"
The Flying Horse Big Band - "Bat-spin"
David Crosby - "She's got to be somewhere"
Brandon Seabrook Trio - "Bovicidal"
The Flying Horse Big Band - "Bat-spin"
Kamasi Washington - "Humility"
Lisa Hilton- "Too hot"
The Flying Horse Big Band - "Bat-spin"
Indo-Pak Coalition - "Rasikapriya"
Kait Dunton - "OCD"
The Flying Horse Big Band - "Bat-spin"
Hoaxer - "Reprise of menthol buddha menthol"
Roscoe Mitchell - "Discussions I"
The Flying Horse Big Band - "Bat-spin"
Aquaserge - "Virage sud"

These are all great tunes, each played on BTT in the past year.

That's it for now!  More on the funding drive soon!

October 1, 2018

https://cjsw.com/program/breaking-the-tethers/episode/20181001

This show marked my return to the airwaves after a week away in NYC (and, yes, I saw some live music when I was there, Mark Guiliana Space Heroes at the Jazz Standard).  Mostly new releases this week with a couple of older tracks played.  Fave piece of music from this program: Probably "Trace" by the Bad Plus off their 2018 release Never stop II, which led off the show.

Oh, and thanks again to Linda Cunningham for hosting last week!

The next edition of Breaking The Tethers will be at the usual time and place, Monday, October 8, 10-11 am MT, 90.9 FM or cjsw.com.

I should also point out that the annual CJSW funding drive is coming soon, starting on Friday, Oct. 19. More about this in another post soon!

https://cjsw.com/program/breaking-the-tethers/episode/20180924

A nifty show hosted by Linda Cunningham in my absence.  Nice that she played some Art Blakey; I haven’t played any Art for quite some time.  Many thanks to Linda for taking the reins of BTT this week!

I’ll be returning next week, Monday, October 1, 10-11 am, 90.9 FM or cjsw.com, with a program of mixed tunes, both stylistically (as always) and date-wise (after three weeks of “all-new” shows).

A reminder also that the annual CJSW funding drive is coming soon. The shindig starts on Friday, October 19 and finishes up one week later, on Friday, October 26.  The Breaking The Tethers 2018 funding drive edition will take place on Monday, October 22, with me and Linda co-hosting, as we’ve done for the past few years.  Please join us! (And pledge!)

September 17, 2018

https://cjsw.com/program/breaking-the-tethers/episode/20180917

This was the third of three (in a row) "all-new" Breaking The Tethers episodes.  No Canadian content this week but there was the usual mix of styles along with a longer piece, "Ohoneotree suite" by Anteloper.

I'm off to NYC next week so there'll be no show for me on Sept. 24.  Linda Cunningham will be filling in once more and will do her usual fine job.  Linda will also be joining me on the Breaking The Tethers 2018 CJSW Funding Drive edition on Monday, October 22; more on this soon!  I'll be back behind the boards for the Oct. 1 program (which likely won't be all-new).

https://cjsw.com/program/breaking-the-tethers/episode/20180910

Playing catchup here, this is the podcast and tracklist for the Sept. 10 program. Like the previous week, I put together an all-new show featuring lots of Canadian content (6 of 9 tracks) and plenty of stylistic variation. And that is all (for this week... :-)

September 3, 2018

http://cjsw.com/program/breaking-the-tethers/episode/20180903

Happy labour day!  I hope everyone listening had a great day, whether or not they had to work!

This episode was the first of what's probably going to be at least a few "all-new" shows.  I've got loads and loads of newly-released (mostly) and newly-re-released stuff that I want to get on air, quite the backlog.  Accordingly, Breaking The Tethers will be in "new" territory for a while.  Gotta catch up!

Musically, I really dug what was played this week, from the crazed dance tuba of the Sons of Kemet at the start to the jazz guitar of Harley Card at the end.  I'm aiming for the same feel next week!

On that note, the next program will be Monday, September 10 (geez, September already!), 10-11 am MT, 90.9 FM or cjsw.com.  Please tune in!

Andrew

PS On the recording, I cut off the few few minutes.  My apologies for this.  I believe the show is complete after this.

August 20, 2018

http://cjsw.com/program/breaking-the-tethers/episode/20180820

I was away for this program.  Linda Cunningham filled in and played this nice mixed bag of music, as per usual.  Many thanks to Linda!  She'll be back for more show fills for Breaking The Tethers in the not-too-distant future.

August 9, 2018 (Alternative To What?)

https://cjsw.com/program/alternative-to-what/episode/20180809

I was fill-in host here again for this long-running CJSW program.  As usual, I took a trip far and wide across the musical map, featuring odd jazz, 80's alternative, something from the Simpsons, Beatles movie music, Afro-American rock, jam music, and much more.  Many thanks as always to Kerry Clarke for letting me do my thing on her program!

Andrew

August 13, 2018

https://cjsw.com/program/breaking-the-tethers/episode/20180813

Mostly new music this week (I have loads of newly-released stuff that I want to get on air!) with a couple of visits to the past. There was a nice mix of styles and plenty of Canadian content. Nothing more to be said!

I'll be away for the next two shows, Monday, August 20 and Monday, August 27.  Linda Cunningham will be taking care of the Aug. 20 program and John Reid is on board for the Aug. 27 edition. Thanks in advance to Linda and John!  I'll be back on air for the Monday, September 3 show (which will likely be an all-new show).

August 6, 2018

https://cjsw.com/program/breaking-the-tethers/episode/20180806

This was a show much like last week, featuring much variation in style and age.  I also followed last week by playing a cover and its original version, in this case "Contemplation" by the Lenny Marcus Trio, released this year, and "Contemplation", the original, by McCoy Tyner, recorded and released in 1967.

I should apologize for the last song played in this program.  I had meant to play a track by Jerry Granelli.  I announced the track by Jerry Granelli.  But then I accidentally played a song by the Muffins.  Sorry!  I will make up for this gaffe by putting the Jerry Granelli song on air first thing on the next show.

On that note, the next Breaking The Tethers episode will be one week from now, Monday, August 13, 10-11 am MT, 90.9 FM, cjsw.com (usual time, usual place).

However, I will be on air before then, guest-hosting Alternative To What? on Thursday, August 9, 4-6 pm, same radio station.  I always have fun hosting ATW? (not that I don't with my own show, of course!).  Please join me if you can!

July 26, 2018 (Alternative To What?)

https://cjsw.com/program/alternative-to-what/episode/20180726

This was guest-host gig for me, filling in for long-time host Kerry Clarke on her program, Alternative To What?  As I usually do on this show, I went here, there, and everywhere over the musical map.  As well as presenting both newly-released and older material, I played afrobeat, proto-punk, lesser-known 60s rock, comedy, bluegrass, various types of jazz, and surf music, to name just a few styles featured.  Needless to say, I had a lot of fun!  Many thanks again to Kerry for handing me the reigns for this show!

I should also add that I'll be hosting ATW? again, on Thursday, August 9, 4-6 pm, on CJSW, 90.9 FM, cjsw.com.  Expect more of the same!

Andrew

July 30, 2018

https://cjsw.com/program/breaking-the-tethers/episode/20180730/

A birthday show for me, this was a nice and varied program with loads of great music (well, as much as I could fit into an hour!).  Tunes included a live track ("The machine demands a sacrifice" - what a great title!) from UK jazz-rock band, Colosseum, from an early incarnation (I'm planning to delve into this world again on the Aug. 6 show with a live piece from the UK jazz-rock band, Nucleus); two versions of Joe Henderson's "Black narcissus", the original and one from 2018; and another excerpt from the crazy Nat Adderley/Cannonball Adderley/Rick Holmes theme albums of the early 1970s, this one dealing with religion.

Expect more the same sort of thing, generally speaking, on the Aug. 6. edition of Breaking The Tethers.  Join me from 10-11 am MT at 90.9 FM on the dial or at cjsw.com on the Web.

July 23, 2018

https://cjsw.com/program/breaking-the-tethers/episode/20180723

Two things to mention about this show. There was a nifty selection of music played.  Also, more importantly, the main event was a live performance and interview with the Winnipeg group, Apollo Suns. They dropped by CJSW, played a couple of great tunes for about 20 minutes, and then I chatted with three of the members for a bit. It was wonderful to have them on Breaking The Tethers!

The next BTT program  will be on Monday, July 30 (which happens to be my birthday 😀), 10-11 am MT, 90.9 FM, cjsw.com.  No special guest for this episode, just good music (the usual jazz-broadly-defined kinda stuff).

Before then, however, I'll be guest-hosting Alternative To What? on CJSW, Thursday, July 6, 4-6 pm.  Thanks to the regular host, Kerry Clarke, for handing me the reins.  It should be lots of fun.  I'm planning to take a wide (and wild) and varied trip across the musical map.

Another show I was away for but ably hosted by Adam Mbowe (thanks again, Adam!) with an interesting bunch of tunes played.

I will be back for the Monday, July 23 program, 10-11 am MT, 90.9 FM, www.cjsw.com.  I'll be playing a mix of new and old jazz but the main event will be a live performance by the Winnipeg band Apollo Suns! Should be great!  Please tune in for that and more!

July 9, 2018

https://cjsw.com/program/breaking-the-tethers/episode/20180709

After a week away (thanks to Linda Cunningham for filling in on July 2!), I was back doing that radio thing again today.  Like my last appearance, I decided to make this an "all-new" program. I featured a fairly wide variety of tracks; different styles, etc. The main thing here, though, was that I bookended the program with a couple of pieces from the new John Coltrane release, Both directions at once: the lost album. It's always good to play Coltrane and "new" Coltrane is a fine thing! I'm aiming to fit in at least one more offering from this release in the weeks to come.

I'm gone again for the next edition of BTT, which will be Monday, July 16, 10-11 am MT, 90.9 FM, cjsw.com.  Adam Mbowe will be taking charge of the show that day. Please tune in!

I'll hosting again on July 23.  There may be a live performance that day... stay tuned for more info!

First show in July, guest-hosted by Linda Cunningham.  Looks like Linda went a fair ways across that musical map!  Many thanks to Linda for hosting in my absence.

I'll be back on air for the next program.  This'll be Monday, July 9, 10-11 am MT, 90.9 FM, www.cjsw.com. I think I'll make this another all-new edition of BTT. After that, I'll be gone the next week, July 16 (Adam Mbowe will be filling in) and then back (for a while!) on July 23.

June 25, 2018

https://cjsw.com/program/breaking-the-tethers/episode/20180625

It's June 25 already... halfway through the year... sigh... but what's the alternative?!

Anyway, a good show today with a wide variety of styles presented. It also featured the most number of tracks played (12) in quite some time; normally, I play eight or nine per 60 minute program, occasionally one or two more.  I'm sure I've played more than 12 before but not for a long while.
Oh, and everything played today was newly-released.

I'm away for the next show, which will be on Monday, July 2, but Linda Cunningham will be filling in. Please join Linda from 10-11 am, 90.9 FM, cjsw.com.  I'll be back for the July 9 program and then away again on July 16 (more on that later).

June 18, 2018

https://cjsw.com/program/breaking-the-tethers/episode/20180618

First show back after two weeks away. This was a good one, I thought, with a mix of old and new and of styles.  There was oddball jazz-funk (Steve Coleman and Five Elements), straight-ahead soul-jazz (Jerry Weldon), jazz quartet meets string quartet (Peter Madsen's Seven Sins Ensemble), and more.

The next Breaking The Tethers program will be on Monday, June 25, 10-11 am MT, 90.9 FM,
cjsw.com.  I might make this an all-new show; I've got quite the pile (literally and figuratively) of new music on deck that I want to share.

This was the first of two shows in June that I won't be hosting. This week's episode was hosted by John C. Reid, who focused on the artists that will be coming for the YYC Summer Jazz Festival 2018.  Many thanks, John!

As I type, Adam Mbowe is hosting the June 11 program (thanks, Adam!).  I'll post on this show later.

I'll be back on air next week, Monday, June 18, 10-11 am MT, 90.9 FM, www.cjsw.com.  Please join me then!

Not too much to say here.  Mostly new material today.  It was nice to be able to play some Wayne Shorter ("Playground" from 1967's Schizophrenia); haven't done that in a while.

The next Breaking The Tethers show will be on Monday, June 4, usual time (10-11 am MT), usual place (90.9 FM, cjsw.com).  But I won't be there!  I'm off the air that day and the following week, Monday, June 11.  John Reid will more than ably fill in on BTT next week (and Adam Mbowe will do the job on June 11).  Please join John for a great show!  I'll return on Monday, June 18.

Thanks!

May 24, 2018 (Alternative To What?)

http://cjsw.com/program/alternative-to-what/episode/20180524

Not Breaking The Tethers but a showfill for Alternative To What? (ATW?), Kerry Clarke's long-running CJSW program.  Kerry was away this week and kindly let me handle the reins of ATW? for this week (many thanks, Kerry!).  I always enjoy hosting her show and this one was no different.  As I usually do for ATW?, I took a two hour trip all over that musical map.  Highlights: an Indian lean to a fair amount of the music; freak folk; avant-garde big band; "Puking in the heather"; and much more!

I'll be back behind the board next Monday, May 28, 10-11 am MT, 90.9 FM, www.cjsw.com, for the next edition of my regular show, Breaking The Tethers.  Please tune in with me then!

The usual mix of old and new and a variety of styles this week. I definitely dug everything played. Hope you did, too! Next week's show will be very much along the same lines.

On the subject of next week's show, it'll be Monday, May 28, 10-11 am MT, 90.9 FM, www,cjsw.com... the usual time and place!

I should also note that I'll be away a few Mondays over the next several weeks. Here's when I'll be gone along with the guest hosts for Breaking The Tethers those days:

June 4: John Reid
June 11: Adam Mbowe
July 2: Linda Cunningham

Many thanks in advance to John, Adam, and Linda!

One more "I should also note": I will be guest-hosting Alternative To What? this Thursday, May 24, 4-6 pm MT, same radio station. The regular host, Kerry Clarke, is away so I'll be filling her shoes (only a bit!) this week.  Should be fun; I'll be playing stuff from all over the musical map.

Thanks!

A "regular" kind of show, with new and old material and a fairly wide variety styles.  That being said, there was a bit of lean toward guitar, with that instrument appearing prominently in half or so of the tracks. Such is the way it goes sometimes.

Fave track this week: "Max's tune" by the Jeff Beck Group, off their 1971 record, Rough and ready. It's a piece of music that I've always enjoyed, from a record that I find myself getting pulled into more and more.

I should note that, on the CJSW site for this show (see above), the first two songs on the tracklist are in the wrong order. "Syntax error" should be first and "More chicken" second.  I thought I had these right when I entered them into the system but I must have accidentally flipped them.

The next Breaking The Tethers episode will be next week, Monday, May 21, 10-11 am MT on radio station CJSW, 90.9 FM or www.cjsw.com

So, after last week's program, I suggested that this week's show should have a lean to the avant side of things (the April 30 show had a lean to the straight-ahead, more or less).  For the most part, I think I succeeded in that.  I think I especially hit the mark with the 23+ minute "Septober energy, part" from the Septober energy by the 50+ member jazz/prog/etc band Centipedge, released in 1971.  And some folks actually liked the track 😃, judging by people who came by the booth door and called.

The next show will be at the usual place and time, CJSW, 90.9 FM, www.cjsw.com, Monday, May 14, 10-11 am MT.  Please tune in!

A mix of old and new this week, some stylistic variation, though not much that on the out-there side of things; I'll have to deal with that next week :-)  Lots of guitar and piano plus Afrobeat! (Seun Kuti)

This was also UNESCO International Jazz Day! I should have come across it (much) earlier but I didn't find out about it until a few days ago - my bad! Anyway, play some jazz today for International Jazz Day and all will be well!

Next episode: Monday, May 7 (May already...), 10-11 am MT, 90.9 FM, www.cjsw.com. Please tune in for some good music!

https://cjsw.com/program/breaking-the-tethers/episode/20180423

This was the Breaking the Tethers show for the 2018 CJSW Listener Appreciation Week.  Linda Cunningham joined me on air and we played some tracks that had been earlier requested by BTT listeners (and a couple from me and Linda).  Many thanks to everyone who submitted requests!  Here's what was played and who requested each track after in parantheses:
  • How would you like to have a head like that
Jean-Luc Ponty • King kong (Dave)
  • Veiled
    Dan Weiss • Starebaby (Andrew)
  • Changing opinion
Philip Glass • Songs from liquid days (John)
  • The shaman: concerto for percussion and orchestra: III. fire dance
    Vincent Ho/Evelyn Glennie/WSO • The Shaman/Arctic Symphony (Linda)
  • The healing smoke
Jan Garbarek • Visible world (Linda's cousin)
  • Heavy lifting
LYNNeS • Heartbreak Song of the Radio (Linda)
  • Last train home
Pat Metheny • Still life (talking) (Brian)
I should note that Listener Appreciation Week is still going on; there's two days left, through April 27.  Check out what's happening at www.cjsw.com/wild/

Join me for the next edition of Breaking The Tethers on Monday, April 30, 10-11 am MT, 90.9 FM, www.cjsw.com.  This will be a "regular" kind of program, with some variety of styles and dates in the music played.

CJSW Listener Appreciation Week 2018 and Breaking The Tethers

For the past couple of years, CJSW has held a Listener Appreciation Week (LAW) once a year.  For 2018, LAW will be held from Friday, April 20 through Friday, April 27.  Loads of great stuff will be happening this week; check it all out at www.cjsw.com/wild.

The Breaking The Tethers LAW show will be on Monday, April 23, 10-11 am MT, 90.9 FM, www.cjsw.com.  Hosting this week will be me and Linda Cunningham. This will be an all-request show!  Linda and I would like CJSW listeners to select the material, in advance, for this program. We're looking for performances that would fit into the BTT format (jazz, broadly writ, leaning a bit "out there"), nothing too long (BTT is only an hour long).  Tell us what you'd like to hear! You can send requests through this blog, via Twitter (I'm @01Waller and Linda is @lasquetipress), or by email to me at wallersmooth@gmail.com.  Looking forward to hearing from everyone!

Thanks.

A solid show here, I thought, with a nice mix of tunes.  I'm always happy to play something by the Forgas Band Phenomena ("Eclipse").  It was also good to feature a couple of pieces ("The split" parts 1 and 2) by Braid, Murley, Mogensen, and Aman, from their recent Juno award-winning recording, The north.

The next edition of Breaking The Tethers will be a special one, an all-request show for CJSW Listener Appreciation Week 2018 (www.cjsw.com/wild). There'll be more information in another post soon.  The day and time will be the usual; Monday, April 23, 10-11 am MT, 90.9 FM, www.cjsw.com.

April 9, 2018

https://cjsw.com/program/breaking-the-tethers/episode/20180409

Another nice, varied show, generally the kind of thing I aim for with Breaking The Tethers.  There was a bookend of tunes from Pat Metheny's Unity band and even some singing (from Melody Gardot, one of the few jazz singers that I actually quite like).

I should talk a bit about the next two programs, April 16 and April 23.  The former will be much like the April 9 show; that is, a mix of old and new and a variety of styles (I'll be playing some Cecil Taylor music, by the way; Taylor passed away on April 5).  The latter will be much different.  This will be the Breaking The Tethers CJSW Listener Appreciation Week (LAW) 2018 show. Linda Cunningham and I will tag-team host a special all-request edition of BTT; more on this soon!  And, of course, all of this will be on CJSW, 90.9 FM, www.cjsw.com, Mondays from 10-11 am MT.

For more information on LAW 2018, April 20-17, check out www.cjsw.com/wild/!

And now I'm in April.  Only two more postings and I'm caught up on the shows!

This was an interesting program, at least from my perspective.  It was possibly the most straight-ahead show I've done in a while (though there was still some kinda out-there stuff e.g. the tracks by 4s'D and Party Pack Ice).  In addition, there was a fair amount of big band (somewhat broadly defined) music in the show, something I don't play that much of.  Nothing wrong with any of this.  Variety is the spice of life, etc. 😃

More catching up. This was my first show back after two weeks away, one absence planned, one absence unplanned (thanks to Linda and Adam for filling in the previous two programs).  As I was gone for a bit, the new arrivals had backed and, as a result, I decided that it was time to do another "all-new stuff" show, which is what March 26 ended up being.  Looking at the tracklist, it's about half Canadian, there's a mix of styles, and, maybe best of all, has a Ron Carter bass solo to start things off!

March 22, 2018 (Alternative To What?)

https://cjsw.com/program/alternative-to-what/episode/20180322

Playing catch-up here, I filled in for Kerry Clarke on Alternative To What? on March 22 (thanks, Kerry!).  I managed to squeeze in lots of songs in many styles, with a few featuring an astrology theme (both pro and con).  The most important thing, though, was that Calgary band Ride The Sky joined me in the first hour and played four tracks live!  Afterwards, I chatted with the band members in what was their first radio interview (and performance!).  It was a please having them in the CJSW studios.

So, the plan was to do an all-new-music edition of Breaking The Tethers today.  However, a sick kid kept me at home so CJSW station manager, Adam Kamis, took to the mic in my absence.  He put together a great program and at the last-minute!  Many thanks to Adam!

To next week, Monday, March 26.  I will be back on air and I will do an all-new show.  Please tag in with me from 10-11 am MT, 90.9 FM or www.cjsw.com

Thanks.

This week's show was hosted by Linda Cunningham. I was out-of-town and Linda more-than-ably filled in and did her usual great job.  Check out the tracklist; she played a nifty range of material.

I'll be back behind the mic next Monday, March 19, 10-11 am MT, 90.9 FM or www.cjsw.com.  I'm going to make this episode an all-new-music program; I've got lots of new material I'd like to get out there.

Thanks.

This week's program featured a bit of a slant to (sort of) straight-ahead sounds or at least as straight-ahead as I get.  I'll have to bump up the freakiness factor in the future 😀 . I also continued the short-term tradition of starting the show with a long piece; this week, it was "Personal mountains" by Keith Jarrett from the album Sleeper, recorded in 1979 in Tokyo but not released until 2012.

Breaking The Tethers will be on next Monday, as usual, except I won't be there. I'll be out-of-town so Linda Cunningham will be filling in for me once more.  It'll be great!  Please tune in from 11 am to noon MT on CJSW, 90.9 FM or www.cjsw.com.  I'll be back on air the following Monday, March 19.

I've been starting some recent Breaking The Tethers shows with long tunes and I continued that practice today, kicking things off with the 23+ minute "Sometime ago - La fiesta" by Chick Corea, a track I've been wanting to play for a while.  I'm aiming to do the same thing on next week's show; maybe a long Keith Jarret piece I've had my eye on...

On that note, the next edition of BTT will be on Monday, March 5, 10-11 am MT, 90.9 FM or www.cjsw.com. Join me then!

Back to Breaking The Tethers! A regular BTT kinda show this week, with old and new music and a variety of styles of jazz.  My fave track this week was probably "Brigach and Ganges", a 21+ minute indo-jazz excursion from 1967.  I've somewhat got into the habit recently of beginning the program with a long track, such as "Brigach and Ganges"; I think I'll carry that on for a while with future shows.

On that note, the next edition of Breaking The Tethers will be on Monday, February 26, 2018, 10-11 am MT on Calgary's community and campus radio station, CJSW, 90.9 FM or www.cjsw.com.

A reminder that you can listen to older Breaking The Tethers shows on the CJSW site: http://cjsw.com/program/breaking-the-tethers/.  As well, you can listen to older BTT programs, usually around six at a time, on iTunes; you can go here or click on SUBSCRIBE on the BTT CJSW site.  You can also do the same for other CJSW shows!

February 16, 2018 (Alternative To What?)

http://cjsw.com/program/alternative-to-what/episode/20180215

No Breaking The Tethers (BTT) here!  This was a guest-hosting gig on Alternative To What? (ATW), one of the longest-running programs on CJSW (it might be the longest now), hosted by Kerry Clarke.  Kerry was unavailable this week so she kindly let me loose on her show. Many thanks, Kerry!

I always like hosting ATW, for two main reasons.  First, it's two hours long, which allows me to go an hour longer than my usual show, Breaking The Tethers.  More time for more music!  Second, the wide musical scope of ATW means that I can play a dog's breakfast of music (not that I don't lean in this direction on BTT), which I think I did on ATW this week e.g. I played a Bob Dylan gospel tune, "Blessed is the name, and a song from a "satanic" group, Coven, "The white witch of Rose Hall".

http://cjsw.com/program/breaking-the-tethers/episode/20180212/

A few notes about today's show:

*Only one older track played today (everything else was newly released), the free-form "Alpha omega apocalypse" by the late Bruce Palmer, from 1971.  Even though the it was the sole "oldie" on BTT, it made up for it in length, running at 16+ minutes.  It also featured vocals from the one and only Rick James!

*Interestingly, all the new pieces of music just had one word titles.  The only multi-word title belonged to "Alpha omega apocalypse".  Honestly, I didn't plan this!

*I cut off the first few minutes of the show on the recording.  My apologies.  Fortunately, it just chops out some of my rambling and not any music!

That's it!  Thanks for listening this week.

The next episode of Breaking The Tethers will be on Monday, February 19, 2018, from 10-11 am MT, on radio station CJSW, 90.9 fm or www.cjsw.com.

Another mixed bag of sounds, much like last week, with mostly new(ish) tracks played.  This week was a bit less "out there" than last. I did a thematic book-end of sorts today, with two songs with the word "nebula" in their titles starting and ending a set of four tunes ("Nebular" by Food from their 2012 album Mercurial balm - a fave of mine - and "Nebula" by the Liebman/Murley Quartet from their 2017 record Live at U of T).  I've got a few more bookends in the planning stages...

See ya next week, Monday, February 5, 2018, 10-11 am MT, 90.9 FM, www.cjsw.com.

Thanks for listening!

http://cjsw.com/program/breaking-the-tethers/episode/20180129

This was the last show for January 2018 (already!) and was much in the same line as last week, mostly new material with some visits to the past, largely leaning to the outer rim of the jazz world though with some variety (my run-on sentence for the day!).  There we go, program summed up! :-)

The next show will be on at the usual time, usual place, Monday, February 5, 2018, radio station CJSW, 90.9 FM or www.cjsw.com.

Thanks for listening!

http://cjsw.com/program/breaking-the-tethers/episode/20180122/

After a couple of weeks of featuring all-new material, this show featured a return to the more usual format of older and more recent content being played.  That being said, it still had a lean to the newer side, with six of the eight tracks played coming from 2017 (I think one track, by Tricia Edwards, is actually a 2018 release though I'm not 100% sure).

This show also had lean to the out-there side of jazz a bit, manifest especially in the first piece of music played, Nels Cline and Gregg Bendian's loud, noisy, and crazed cover of John Coltrane's "Leo" (from their 1999 release, Interstellar space revisited).  Admittedly, I really liked this!  I hope it gave some folks a mid-morning freak-out :-)

The next BTT episode will be on Monday, January 29, 2018, usual place, usual time i.e. CJSW, 90.9 fm or www.cjsw.com, 10-11 am MT.  Please join me if you can!

As well, remember that you can listen to Breaking The Tethers shows going back several months at www.cjsw.com.  You can also listen and subscribe via iTunes, in the podcast section.  The same goes for other CJSW programs.

January 15, 2018

http://cjsw.com/program/breaking-the-tethers/episode/20180115

Another all-new edition of Breaking The Tethers here (gotta work through that backlog!).  Fave title this week: "The snakes always talk about the ill-fitting doll clothes on the chickens" by Tryyo.

An apology with the podcast: I chopped off the first few minutes of this show.  Not too much is missing; some talking from me (not important) and a bit of the first tune (important).

Next week's program, Monday, January 22, 10-11 am MT, will not be an "all-new" show.  I've done two of those in a row and it's time to go back to the usual mix of older and newer material.  Join me for this "not all-new" show at 90.9 FM or www.cjsw.com.

I've got a big backlog of new material that I'd like to feature on Breaking The Tethers.  Accordingly, I turned this into an "all-new" show.  Fave track this week: "Apocalympics" by the Gordon Grdina Quartet.  Couldn't resist playing something with that title, especially considering that the winter olympics are only about a month away (not that this is a commentary on the olympics!).

The next show will be on Monday, January 15, 10-11 am MT, 90.9 FM, www.cjsw.com.  This will also be an "all-new" program, again, just to put a dent in the backlog.  I think the show after that, January 22, will feature the more common mix of old and new music.

January 1, 2018

http://cjsw.com/program/breaking-the-tethers/episode/20180101/

This was the first Breaking The Tethers show of the new year.  It was connected to the list of 2017 top (jazz) albums that I put together and appeared on the CJSW Twitter feed (@CJSW) at the same time as this show (in no particular order):

Rubim de Toledo - The gap
Alien Ensemble - Alien Ensemble 2
Hudson - Hudson
Keith Price - Double quartet
Pharaoh Sanders - Tauhid, Jewels of thought, and Deaf dumb blind (summun kukmun umyun) (reissues)
Chicago/London Underground - A night walking through mirrors
David S. Ware & Matthew Shipp Duo - Live in Sant'Anna Arrest, 2004
William Parker/Raining On The Moon - Great spirit
David S. Ware/Apogee - Birth of a being
Quinsin Nachoff - Flux

The tracks I played in this show were from a few of these albums (I only have an hour, can't play them all!) but were songs that I hadn't played earlier.  It was a nice mix, I thought.

This was the Breaking The Tethers annual Christmas show, this year actually taking place on Christmas Day.  I was joined by frequent BTT guest host and co-host Linda Cunningham.  We chatted about various Christmasy things and played a bunch of Christmas and/or winter-themed tracks (including the always-fun "Merry fucking Christmas", which I think I've played on BTT every holiday season for about the last decade!).  Many thanks to Linda for all the work she put into this program!

Second last program of 2017, this was in the same vein as the previous week, featuring two older tracks coupled with new material.  In this case, the "old" stuff was made up of parts 2 and 3 of McCoy Tyner's "Enlightenment suite", released in 1973.  Everything else was from 2017.
