"Captain courageous" - Lester Bowie (African children)
"Finger on the pulse" - Fred Frith (Impur II)
"I've never been in love before" - The Cory Weeds Quintet (Everything's coming up weeds)
A nice mixed bag program, leaning to the more avant/experimental/free side of things. I even snuck in a Christmas tune, though it's a banjo-throat singing version of "Jingle Bells".
This was my last show until Tuesday, January 12, 2010. I will be out of the country for the next three editions of Breaking The Tethers. I'm not sure who will be filling in for me (I believe it will be a variety of folks) but I'm sure they will do a great job. More postings (and music) next year.

This was a showfill for the Monday morning jazz program on CJSW, The Jazz Baby. The regular host, Kat Lord, couldn't make it this week so I filled in. I very much liked the line-up of tunes this week; the tracklist was put together with a little less care and a little more haste than usual but things worked out well. I was particularly fond of the music that was new to me, including the Revolutionary Ensemble and the Sun Ra track (not that Sun Ra is new to me, of course, but the track I played was).
I'll be back on air tomorrow with Breaking The Tethers, the second last show until my break.

Two more shows to go and then I am off to Barbados for a couple of weeks or so. I'll be doing Breaking The Tethers on December 8 and 15 and then will be skipping the December 22 and 29 and January 5 programs. I'm not sure yet who is covering for me but I'm sure whoever it is will do a great job in my absence. My first show of 2010 will be January 12.

A few interesting things about this show:
*This was the second edition of Breaking The Tethers to come from the new CJSW broadcast facilities.
*Everything played on the show was "new"; newly released, fairly recently released, recently re-released, etc. I do shows like this now and again and this was one of them, largely unplanned (until I realized that I had a big pile of "new" CDs).
*There were a number of African-sounding tunes on the program, including the Bela Fleck track and "Chan chan" by the Kora Jazz Trio (there's a great piano solo on this).
*Best title this week: "Kramer vs. Kramer vs. Godzilla" by Ben Allison.
Back in a week. Three more shows before my Christmas break.

This was the first Breaking The Tethers show in the new CJSW studios. While they are still being moved into, the new digs are spacious and comfortable and most of the equipment in the booth is new. Plus, there are windows - I saw the sunrise yesterday! After the totally windowless environment of the old location, this was a very nice change. There will be more settling in to do but, so far, so good. I look forward to next week's program.

"Mahkota kotor window" - Arrington de Dionyso (Malaikst dan singa)
"Nowhere" - Michael Gibbs (Lancaster University 1969)
"Reflections" - Dean McNeill (Prairie fire: large jazz ensemble)
This was an enjoyable show, at least from my perspective. Plenty of new "out there" jazz and more good stuff. My favourties this week include "Platypus" from the new Ben Allison release, "Chasing the ghost" by the Darius Jones Trio, and the totally crazy "Mahkota kotor window" by Arrington de Dionyso.
Also, I think this might have been the last edition of Breaking The Tethers in the old CJSW studio space. As has been mentioned, the station is definitely moving and is moving now. Walls are bare, the library is being emptied, and furniture is disappearing. We could be broadcasting out of the new space, on the 3rd floor of MacEwan Hall (the CJSW studio and offices are in the basement at present) within a matter of days. For more info, see the CJSW expansion blog; there's lots of photos and videos that give a good idea of what the new digs will look like.

"Blues for Shyam Babu" - Deepak Ram (Steps)
"Push" - John Wojciechowski (Lexicon)

"In the whitecage" - The Fonda Stevens Group (Memphis)
"Spy movie" - Bobby Selvaggio (Unspoken dialogue)
"Flying, part II" - Keith Jarrett/Gary Peacock/Jack DeJohnette (Setting standards)
This was the post-funding drive show, the return to the usual format of Breaking The Tethers (i.e. mostly music, a bit of talk, rather than the other way around, which is what happens during funding drive). I think what was played this week was a nice mix of things, perhaps leaning to the avant/experimental side. Also, I actually played four tracks with vocals (excluding Keith Jarrett's vocalizations on "Flying, part II"); what is the world coming to? Fave piece: "Look to the neutrino" by Greg Burk.

"Open window" - David Friesen (Castles and flags)

"You never know" - Tanya Kalmanovitch Hut Five (Out where the trains don't run)
"Big eater" - The Bad Plus (These are the vistas)
"Void" - Julius Hemphill Quartet (At Dr. King's table)
"Jazzy Jeff's theme" - Nuyorcian soul (Nuyorcian soul)
"Batucada" - Walter Wanderley (Sounds from Verve hi-fi compiled by Thievery Corporation)
Only 15 tunes in today's show? Well, that's because this was the Funding Drive 2009 edition of Breaking The Tethers and featured much more talk than music. All but one of the tracks had been previously played on Breaking The Tethers before (mostly in the past year) and were also included in the mixed incentive CDs that were offered during the show (all were taken, BTW). The sole exception was "Irish tacos" by Sinistrio, which appears on this year's "live at CJSW" double CD set (which is also an incentive offered during this funding drive).
BTW, $910 was pledged during the show today. This is a little less than what I had hoped for (I was hoping for $1000) but it's still great. Many thanks to those who made pledges!
I'll be back next week with the usual kind of show.

"Sunset on the night on the river Nile" - Sun Ra (Black Saint/Soul Note: critics' pick sampler (vol. 3))
I have to admit, I really enjoyed this show (not that I don't enjoy them all, of course). There was a fair mix of styles but it all pretty much fit my palate and, hopefully, that of many listeners as well. I was particularly pleased to be able to play the entire "King Kong" "suite" from the 2nd CD/4th side of the Mothers of Invention's Uncle Meat recording. I also drew on a fair number of compilations from the CJSW library this week; this produced some interesting finds so I think I'll do more of that in the future.... but not next week!
Next week, as mentioned, is the annual Breaking The Tethers CJSW Funding Drive show. Your support will be very welcome. More information can be found at http://cjsw.com/funding.html. As well, see my recent posts on this blog.

CJSW Funding Drive 2009 and Breaking The Tethers
The Breaking The Tethers funding drive show will take place on Tuesday, October 27, 2009. Please listen and, if you can, make a pledge. My goal for the show this year is to get into quadruple-digits; $1000 or more. Every year, starting in 2006, the amount pledged by the Tethers audience has increased by about $250 every year; last year, we hit $750 (or thereabouts), hence my 2009 goal. If you dig the music on Breaking The Tethers, if you like to hear jazz on the radio, please consider donating.
For those that do donate, there are a number incentives that are given in thanks (apart from keeping CJSW going, something that is worthy in and of itself). First, there are some incentives that come from the station ("swag" it is called in CJSW quarters). These incentives match various levels of giving and can be seen here . Second, there are incentives that will only be offered on the Breaking The Tethers funding drive show. There are some commercial CDs that will be available for donations of $60 or more. These include:

A brief reminder about Funding Drive 2009: It starts soon (Oct. 24) and will be a fun time for all. I'll have more postings on this soon but, in the meantime, check out the CJSW home page and click on the "delicious radio" image.

This was a showfill for Jazz Stains, one of the alternating jazz programs on Friday mornings on CJSW. Looking back, it was kind of on the mellow for the shows I do. Oh well. Such is how things go. I'll have to lean a bit to the freakier side in future programs, just to make up for it :-)

A nice mix of music in today's show, I thought. A bit of everything, including plenty of new stuff (newly released or newly re-released).
I'll be doing a showfill tomorrow, October 9, 6-9 am, for Jazz Stains. Please join me then. Of course, I'll also be behind the mike for Breaking The Tethers on Tuesday, October 13, 6-9 am. Please join me then, too.
Things are coming together nicely for the 2009 CJSW Funding Drive. I've talked about it a bit in the posting for the last few shows. I'll have more to report in a future post, fairly soon. Stay tuned.

Following up on last week's post, here's a few more things about this year's Funding Drive (i.e. the thing that keeps the radio station going) at CSJW:
*It will run from Oct. 23-30. The Funding Drive edition of Breaking The Tethers will be on Tuesday, October 26.
*While donations of all sizes will be very welcome, my goal for this year is to go over $1000 for Breaking The Tethers. The pledges have increased every year from a few hundred to several hundred (thanks!) and I'm thinking that we could get into 4 digits for the first time in 2010.
*There will be a variety of incentives available for those that pledge during Breaking The Tethers. There will be some regular CJSW incentives plus I'll have some other stuff, including both commercial and "specially-made" CDs. More on incentives next week.
*Listeners can pledge during Funding Week but you can also pledge early, online at http://www.cjsw.com/. Click on the "Make a Pledge Today!" link on the left-hand side.

"Out and about" - John Surman (Way back when)
"Bolivia" - John Stetch (Carpathian blues)
"La arenosa" - Magic Malik (Altiplano)
"The conflict of colour" - David Torkanowsky (Steppin' out)
Another show featuring a number of performers I haven't played before, including Red Holloway (I quite liked "Snu-fu"), Ray Bryant, Teddy Edwards, and David Torkanowsky.
Fave tune this week: "Out and about" by John Surman. I kinda dig that late-60s UK jazz. I wasn't able to listen to the entire CD but I'll have to do that sometime.
I also had a request this week, the first in a few months, I believe. It was a good one: All the caller asked was that I play some Sun Ra of my choosing. Can do gladly, no problem. I picked one of the tunes the Man From Saturn's 1991 recording, At The Village Vanguard, which featured a sextet plucked from the Arkestra (I think it must have been one the last records he released while he was alive but I'm not sure). The track was "Theme of the stargazers".
One last note: The 2009 CJSW funding drive is coming up next month, from October 23-30. CJSW is listener-supported radio so help we can get from our fine listeners is very welcome. Any pledges during the Breaking The Tethers funding drive show (Tuesday, October 27) would be particularly welcome. I'll be posting more information about funding drive week but, to start with, here's a list of 2009 funding drive week events: http://www.cjsw.com/about/news.html?id=94. The logo for the funding drive can be seen on the main CJSW page, centre right bottom.

"Blue & green" - Christoph Lauer (Evidence)
"Magnum, PI" - Ripplegroove (Under the microscope)
"Water's edge part II" - Andy Milne-Benoit Delbecq (Where is pannonica?)
Another wide and varied show, with a lot of performers who I have never played before (at least as leaders); about half of what is listed above falls into the this category.
The second last track played is called "Magnum, PI". If I have my information right, it wasn't written by members of the group (Ripplegroove). Was this a version of the theme song to the TV show of the same name? I wasn't sure; it's been a long while since I watch Magnum PI. If anyone heard the tune and can answer this question, let me know.

"Colors of mime" - "'23'" (Always the sun)

"Morning bell" - Chris Potter (Underground)
"Little sonny" - Sonny Clark (My conception)
"The traveler" - Air (80 degrees below '82)
"Ratio" - Nicholas D'amato's Royal Society (Nullius in verba)
Despite the fact that I tripped over my tongue and the board a bit too much for my likely, I found this show satisfying, at least from a musical perspective. I thought the tracks fitted together particularly nicely today. Some high points: "Kota" by Medeski, Martin, & Wood (new MMW - yay! Radiolarians III! 3rd CD in this series in less than a year! Will there be a Radiolarians IV?) and the crazy "Soft metal tongue" by Looping Jaw Harp Orchestra.
Only one program for me next week, Breaking The Tethers on Tuesday, September 8.

"Moose and grizzly bear's villa" - The Fully Celebrated (Drunk on the blood of the holy ones)
"Last love song" - Klang (Tea music)
As with last week, this show featured a number of performers that I hadn't played before e.g. Henry Threadgill, Adrian Legg, Masabumi Kikuchi, Bob Berg, Jane Ira Bloom. Always glad to feature the "previously-unplayed".
Looking at the post for last week's show, I said that I was going to be doing a showfill for Philip Barker's Morning Joy show on Thursday. Things have been juggled and now I will be covering The Morning After tomorrow. Chef Wayne from South Louisiana Gumbo will be taking Morning Joy instead. Works for me.

This was a fun show, I thought. Lot's of wild stuff from the 70s that go in some interesting directions (e.g. "Round trip" by Beaver Harris, "Tanjah" by Randy Weston) plus two duets featuring the recently-deceased Rashied Ali, who died on August 12.
Next week, I'll be doing Breaking The Tethers on Tuesday (Sept. 1) as usual and I'll also be filling in for Philip Barker on Morning Joy on Thursday (Sept. 3).

"The fly" - Erik Truffaz/Sly Johnson (Paris)
"Secret life of the forbidden city" - Charles Lloyd Quartet (Hyperion with Higgins)
Some notable things about this week's edition of Breaking The Tethers:
*Four tracks with vocals, including one in Norwegian (I think; this was the Sondre Lerche track). I don't think I've had that many in one show before. What is the world coming to.
*First appearance of the late Booker Little, on "Fire waltz" with Eric Dolphy. I'm surprised I've never played Booker Little before but he didn't appear on that many recordings in his short life.
*11 tracks were played in the first hour. Was this a record for 60 minutes? Maybe. The total for the program was 26, a tad higher than average but not the record for Breaking The Tethers (I've played in the range of 32 or 33).
This was my first show back after a week's break. Philip Barker from Morning Glory ably filled in for me. Many thanks to Philip. I'll be doing his September 3 show.

"Pleasing you" - Paul Bley (Justin Time Records: a tenth anniversary collection)
"Even you can tell" - Mark Templeton (Inland)
"Mr. Slick" - Joel Haynes Trio (The time is now)
This was a program with wide and varied tunes, including several from compilations and much that was new to me. My fave (surprise, surprise) has to be the lengthy (approx. 45 min) version of "Leo" from Coltrane's Live In Japan; I was glad to be able to fit this in - it took up almost all of the first hour (6-7 am) of the show (on the subject of Live In Japan, there are only six tracks on four CDs in this recording; two tunes go on for 1 hour each).
I was absent for the August 11 version of Breaking The Tethers and just found out that Philip Barker from Morning Joy ended up filling in for me. Many thanks, as always, to Philip.
I'll be back behind the boards for the August 18 program.

"Sensation whereby space" - Carl Maguire's Floriculture (Sided silver solid)
"The spawn of Abe" - MC Maguire (Trash of civilizations)
"Ugly beauty - var V" - Quatuor du Nord (Quatuor du Nord)
I liked this show a lot. Lots of variation, both in time and content, but there were still a few concentrations e.g. there were a number of tracks that leaned in an experimental direction and over half the pieces played qualified as "Canadian"; I don't think I've played that many Canadian tunes and performers in one show before, though I might have come close.
I won't be on the air for next week's show, Tuesday, August 4; I will be on a short vacation. I'm not sure who will be filling in for me but I'm sure they will do a good job. I will be back behind the board on August 11.
BTW, this is the 100th post on the Breaking The Tethers blog.

A nice, varied show, featuring a number of tracks from CDs that I just pulled from the CJSW library. These included the Anderskov Accident, Iconoclast, and Anandan/Goldstein/Weins. I don't think I'd heard many of these before but I liked them.
"Sunflower" by Milt Jackson was a request. I actually received it last week but couldn't track down the recording until this week. The LP was in the CJSW library but I didn't find it until this week. Basically, it was starting me in the face. Sometimes I miss the obvious.
I just realized that I haven't posted the list for last week's show, July 21, 2009. Ooops. I should have that up later today.

"No neighborhood rough enough" - Steve Lehman Octet (Travail, transformation, and flow)
"Free me" - Bill Banfield Band (Spring forward)
First off, apologies for not posting this earlier but I've had a busy few days: a day-long meeting, medical appoints, a sick pet I had to take to and from the vet, etc.
The main thing this week was another focus on "new" music, though it wasn't a complete "new" show (I did one of those a few weeks back); there were some older, previously-released tunes. This was manifest in a way in the double-set of Abdullah Ibrahim that I played; one piece from 1976 ("Yukio khalifa") and the other from 2008 ("Blue bolero").
I ended up being away for the July 7 Breaking The Tethers (Philip Barker ably filled in - thanks to Philip!). I should be around for a while though I will miss one Tuesday in August. I'll definitely be behind the mic for July 21 and will also be filling in on July 20 program (the Jazz Baby show).

"Kungusisches arbeitslied: miemand weiss hinten, wie er vorn dran ist" - Davis/Ulrich/Baumann/Lutek/Richards/Jefferson (Urs Blochlinger Tribute)
"You take care of me" - The Jerrold Dubyk Quartet (The maverick)
"Call centre labyrinth" - Led Bib (Sensible shoes)
"Blue plate special" - Will Bernard (Blue plate special)
"Transitoire 4" - Nigel Kennedy Quartet (A very nice album)

"La reine de la salle" - John Hebert (Byzantine monkey)
"Phobos" - Darcy James Argue's Secret Society (Presents infernal machines)
"Basic botany" - Carl Maguire's Floriculture (Sided silver solid)
There were two features this week. First, all the music played could be said to be "new" or "fairly recently released" (e.g. late 2008). I didn't plan the show to be this way but, once I saw the amount of new stuff that was on deck, I said "what the heck" and went for it. Second, there were a number of quite long pieces played. Nothing odd there (it is jazz; tunes can be lengthy) but there were more than usual and only 16 tracks were played over three hours.
I might be away next week, I might not be. I could do the show but something has popped where it would be best if I passed on Breaking The Tethers on July 7. So, you might hear my voice in seven days or not. I'll definitely be on the air on July 14, barring disaster.

The program also featured a few tracks from performers who will be at the 2009 Calgary Jazz Festival (e.g. Martin, Medeski, and Wood; Marilyn Lerner; Amanda Tosoff); more of this next week.

"Invisible cities" - Nomo (Invisible cities)
"Forest path" - The Jim Seeley/Arturo O'Farrill Quintet (The Jim Seeley/Arturo O'Farrill Quintet)
This was my first show for three weeks. I was away in Ottawa and Montreal for about a week-and-a-half. Philip Barker did the May 26 show and Stewart Elton took the June 2 edition. Many thanks to both of them!
Lots of interesting tracks played this week, both long and short (the Gypsophilia tune is all of 39 seconds long!). Perhaps my favourite tracks were the first two played, the jumpy "Warblepeck" by the Tony Malaby Cello Trio and "Slightly all the time" by Soft Machine. The latter track was played in honor of the original Soft Machine bass player, Hugh Hopper (who plays on "Slightly..."), who died on June 7.
The next edition of Breaking The Tethers (with me on board) will be June 16. I should be around for most Tuesdays for the next few months or so.

"Hot n' ready" - The Jerrold Dubyk Quartet (The maverick)
"Blister" - Will Bernard (Blue plate special)
"Going what's what" - Torngat (La petit Nicole)
"Silt" - Jeff Younger's Sandbox (The nudger)
"Jewish dance party!" - Gypsophilia (Sa-ba-da-ow!)
"United states" - The Very Big Carla Bley Band (The Very Big Carla Bley Band)
In some ways, this was a somewhat mellower show than usual, at least at points. Still, there was the usual spoonful or two of experimental/freaky music.
Fave stuff this week: Ibrahim Abdullah, Jazz Side of the Moon (did you know that there is a reggae version of Dark Side of the Moon? there's probably a version of DSOTM in every genre of music!), The Fully Celebrated (who can resist a title like "Reptoid alliance"?), and Will Bernard (I've been waiting to hear the Blue Plate Special CD for a long time).
I'm going to be away for a week and a bit and will miss hosting two episodes of Breaking The Tethers, May 26 and June 2. Philip Barker from Morning Joy will be taking over for me on May 26 and will do his usual great job. I'm not sure who will be doing the June 2 show but all should be well. My first show back will be on June 9.

"Ga-ga-goosebumps" - Michael Musillami Trio + 3 (From seeds)
"Locomotion" - Michael Shrieve (Two doors)
"First mind" - Corey Wilkes & Abstrakt Pulse (Cries from tha ghetto)
Musically, I really liked this show. It featured lots of new stuff, an African-influenced tune per hour, live Soft Machine, and much more goodness. The top new tune, I think, was "Squirrel carnage" by Led Bib, a crazy track from a crazy album.
In terms of my performance behind the mic, I wasn't too impressed with myself. Nothing really bad happened but I could have been wittier and not tripped over my tongue as much as I did. Having a coughing fit on air doesn't help either. Oh well. I will be vocal smoothness next week.

"Carla Lisa" - Chris Andrew (Not so fast)
"The ghost series 2" - Evan Parker (Strings with Evan Parker)
"The spirit of soul" - Ken Hatfield and Friends (To be continued… Ken Hatfield and Friends play the music of Bill McCormick)
This week featured a fairly wide and varied set of tracks, including some short(ish) avant/experimental pieces (Lol Coxhill, Beresford/Thomas/Weston, Roger Smith, Evan Parker), two artists who will be at the Calgary Jazz Festival later this year (Allen Toussaint, MMW), some personal faves (Paul Motian), some out-and-out crazy stuff (Bela Fleck), a funky tune (T.J. Kirk), and much more. I just wish I hadn't tripped over my tongue so much when I was talking about these tunes... oh well, there's always next week...

"Newness" - Mayo Groutt's Known Universe (Mayo Groutt's Known Universe)
A few more tracks than last week, though there were still a number of long tunes on this show (Keith Jarrett, the Bruce Freedman African Groove Band). Overall, it was a good show - any show with Sun Ra on it is a good show!

"Concierto de aranjuez" - Jim Hall (Concierto)
"Modal trane" -Turtle Island Quartet (A love supreme: the legacy of John Coltrane)
"L'axe du fou (axis of madness)" - Forgas Band Phenomena (L'axe du fou/Axis of madness)
"Pond life IV" - Ann Southam (Pond life)
"Chasen vs. suribachi" - Medeski, Martin, & Wood (Radiolarians II)
"Brother, can you spare a dime?" - Ray Anderson (Every one of us)
"Succor" - Flow Trio (Rejuvenation)
"T.A. the W. (tender as the wind)" - Lost tribe (Lost tribe)
"The queen's drone" - The Bruce Freedman African Groove Band (Live at the Cellar)
"Uncharted" - Joshua Redman (Compass)
"Erghen diado" - Indigone Trio & Strings (Cycles)
"Lazy snake" - Dave Holland Sextet (Pass it on)
"Four winds" - David Holland Quartet (Conference of the birds)
"Enlightenment" - Graham Haynes (The griot's footsteps)
A whopping 15 tracks here, perhaps the lowest number of items ever played on Breaking The Tethers. The reason for this is because of the length of the tunes; jazz pieces are often long but some in this set went on for quite some time e.g. "Enlightenment" by Graham Haynes is nearly 27 minutes long.
Fave track this week: "Chasen vs. suribachi" by MMW from the brand-new release Radiolarians II. I saw this in Vancouver last week and grabbed it.

"Figwig" - Flute Force Four (Flutistry)
"We're not from around here" - Bill Frisell (The best of Bill Frisell: vol. 1, folk songs)
"Aquatic adventures, episode 19: the unceremonious demise of waterbugs" - Jeff Younger's Sandbox (The nudger)

"Against the day" - Land of Kush (Against the day)
"Stalker" - Time Jazz Quartet (Studies in jazz in studie: aspects of jazz from the Netherlands
"It's all good" - Hank Crawford/Jimmy McGriff (Crunch time)
Perhaps the most notable thing about this show was that 1/5 (4/20) of the tracks feature vocals prominently. Four songs out of 20 may not seem like much but I used to program weeks on end of shows without vocals. Oh well, times change.

"Double-sens (double entendre)" - Forgas Band Phenomena (L'axe du fou/Axis of madness)
"Life" - Palle Mikkelborg (Song…. tread lightly)
"Munchkins" - Mark Helias (Loopin' the cool)
I have to admit, I really liked this show, favourites galore, new and old. I'm particularly fond of the pairing of Soft Machine and Lee Morgan, two of my main likes. Looking at the Soft Machine track in particular, I hadn't heard either their Fourth or Fifth albums until recently and was not sure if they would hold up to the great Third record; they aren't quite as good as Third but they are better than I expected so I played one track on Breaking The Tethers today.

"Hobo comedies" - Jerry Granelli (The V16 project)
"My favorite things" - McCoy Tyner (Guitars)
"Barretts bag" - HAR-You Percussion Group (Sounds of ghetto youth)
Another fun and varied show. There were a number of new tracks, first appearances (Fela!), lots of guitar (especially in the middle hour), some organ, and Indian, African, and Balkan-influenced sounds. A nice mix in all, I think.

"Chief Crazy Horse" - Wayne Shorter Quartet (Usher Hall, Edinburgh, Scotland, March 8, 2003)
"Telematic" - Fieldwork (Simulated progress)
"American buffalo" - Scott Fields Ensemble (Mamet)
Perhaps the most notable thing about this week's show is that I actually played two tracks by local performers (Tricia Edwards and Simon Fisk); normally, I manage one. I don't consciously avoid playing local musicians but I guess they sometimes get lost in the mix; there is loads more content from elsewhere in Canada and internationally. Still, I must remember the local scene, which isn't shabby.

"Autumn solstice" - Rubim de Toledo (The river)
"Free jazz" - Ornette Coleman Double Quartet (Free jazz)
"Tico" - You Percussion Group (Sounds of ghetto youth)

"Make up your mind" - Barry Romberg (Accidental beef)
"Felix major" - The Jeff Presslaff Trio (Red goddess)
"The theme" - Paul Chambers (Bass on top)
"Nataraj" - David S. Ware (Shakti)
"Pick up sticks" - Flow Trio (Rejuvenation)
"Signs & wonders" - Denny Zeitlin/David Friesen (Denny Zeitlin/David Friesen)
Two things to note here: First, believe it or not, this is the only time I've played Ornette Coleman's "Free jazz" on any CJSW show. I played the "First take" of "Free jazz" a couple of years ago but never the original release. Glad to be able to put it on air. Second, only 15 tracks were played today; there were a number of long tunes, including "Free jazz". This might be the fewest number of pieces played in a show I have hosted.
I'll be back on Tuesday with Breaking The Tethers.

"Living room" - The Tom Warrington Trio (The mountain)
"W.W.T.W.D." - The Gordon Grdina Trio (… if accident will)
"Santa Anna" - James Cohen (High side of lowdown)
This show featured loads of guitar (not deliberate, just kinda turned out that way), plenty of electric piano (again, not deliberate) and FOUR tracks with singing! (actually, there are vocalizations on the Dr. Lonnie Smith tune as well) What on earth am I doing? :-) I used to go weeks on end without playing any tracks with vocals. Things change, I guess.
Two other things: I was pleased to get the new McCoy Tyner CD in my hands. It came out late last year so it's been a while but it's still fresh to me and most listeners (I hope). The lengthy live version of "So what" from Miles Davis was good to hear too. There's nice work from Coltrane on this performance (I know, what else would you expect).
I'll be doing the Friday, March 20 edition of Jazz Stains on CJSW, 6-9 am, so feel free to listen in then. After that, it's back to Breaking The Tethers on Tuesday, March 24.

This was a fun show to do. The music was good and the words flowed off my tongue fairly well. This show also featured the 3000th tune played on Breaking The Tethers; and the winner is... "Remembrance" by Don Cherry. A fitting piece, I think.

I was pretty sick when I did this show (still am; I'm fighting a bad cold; I've had it for the better part of a week) and I'd driven to CJSW in an early morning snow/slushstorm. Still, it worked out OK, save for a couple of technical "butterfingers" moments and some trips of the tongue.
Fave tune this week: The Brotherhood Consort's medling of Coltrane and Bach.
Next week's show will be noteworthy in that it will feature the 3000th track played on Breaking The Tethers. This will likely happen sometime in the first half of the second hour (8-9 am MST). I'm not planning to play any particular tune or song but I hope to remember to say a few words at the momentous moment.

I think this was a great show, with a wide variety of tracks played and more in number than usual (nearly 30). A interesting feature was some of the interesting titles e.g. "Zombies love dancin' to this number" and "You are a protocol droid, are you not?" I also loved the crazed version of Heart's "Barracuda" from the new Bad Plus with Wendy Lewis CD.
This was my first show back after two week's absensce. Philip Barker, the Morning Joy host on CJSW, ably filled in for me twice. I am in his debt.

Lots of notable tunes this week, including:
"Dr. Mganga" by Eddie Henderson - funky '70s stuff without being mushy
"Respiration" by Ben Allison - I think I like everything that this guy does
"Seraphic light" by the Saxophone Summit - a great cover of a less-well-known, (very) late period Coltrane tune
"Ca'purange" by Dexter Gordon - things really take off in this piece when Dexter kicks in; Stanley Clarke's electric bass works very well here
"Harmonic disorder" by Matthew Shipp - Matthew Shipp good!!
"The outer view" by George Russell - this must have been way out by 1962 standards
Hmm, I think I really liked the stuff I played this week...
I'll be away for the next two weeks (one week business, one week pleasure). Philip Barker from Morning Joy will be filling in for me on both shows. Many thanks to Philip! I am definitely in his debt. The first Breaking The Tethers with me back will be Tuesday, February 10.

This edition of Breaking The Tethers featured a nice mix of tracks, performers, styles, old and new, etc. I even played a tune from a "smooth jazz" performer, Brian Culbertson (it was the only track I liked from the album). Variety is the spice of life.
I'll be doing the show on January 20 and then I'm away for two weeks, back behind the mike on February 10. Philip Barker from Morning Joy will be taking the Jan. 20 program (thanks, Philip!). I'm not sure who will be doing the Feb. 3 show yet.
